A Changing of the Guard on TC's Board of Trustees

TC's 2010 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipients
The College honors five graduates who have done amazing - and amazingly varied - things. Published: 5/4/2010
TC's second annual Academic Festival - themed "Leadership: Defining the Next Decade" - drew some 500 alumni, faculty, students, staff and friends of the College. Highlights included awarding of the first-ever TC President's Medal of Excellence to Namibian Prime Minister Nahas Angula and Ulysses Byas, a former principal at an all-black school in the segregated American South. Four additional alumni - Raphael Montanez Ortiz, Vivian Oto Wang, Viola Vaughn and the Reverend Lesley George Anderson - were honored with the College's Distinguished Alumni Award, and a fifth, Luis Rios, received the Early Career Award. John Fischer, Former TC President, Passes Away
John H. Fischer, TC's sixth president and also a former dean of the College, passed away in late December at the age of 99. Fischer served as TC's president from 1962 through 1974. A former elementary school teacher, guidance counselor and vice principal, he came to national attention through his enforcement of desegregation as the superintendent of Baltimore city schools, a post he had assumed in 1953. The Passing of an Education Giant
Education reformer Theodore Sizer - founder of the Coalition of Essential Schools and author of Horace's Compromise -- died at 77 on October 21st. Sizer - former chair of TC's President's Advisory Council, and past recipient (with his wife, Nancy Sizer) of the Klingenstein Leadership Award from TC's Klingenstein Center for Independent School Leadership - gave his own account of his career in Those Who Dared: Five Visionaries Who Changed American Education, published by Teachers College Press in 2008. The Art and Craft of Arthur Wesley Dow's Students
The Macy Gallery at Teachers College has mounted an exhibition of some of the artwork created by students of Arthur Wesley Dow, the legendary professor of fine arts at TC who is considered among the most influential teachers of arts and crafts in the nation's history. Published: 9/25/2009

Update on Influenza Preparedness
To the TC Community:
College staff have been working with Columbia University's Pandemic Response Team to refine our preparedness plans in anticipation of an increase this Fall/Winter in the number of reported cases of influenza including an expected increase in the H1N1 strain.

Lucia Capodilupo, who died on Monday of injuries sustained in a car crash, was a major force in advancing the College's research and community outreach programs. She was also the author of a widely read book on spiritualism and weight loss; an ordained minister who had presided at the weddings of TC co-workers; and an admired and much-loved family member, friend and colleague. Reporting Wrongs with a Mouse and a Click
TC has launched a Web site and hotline that provide faculty, staff and students a way to anonymously and confidentially report allegations of misconduct in areas ranging from finance and accounting to environmental health and safety. Published: 7/5/2009
