What Happens During the School Day? New Study Illustrates Racial and Economic Inequality in American Schools
Researchers from the National Center for Children and Families at TC and the University of Maryland have found significant variations in how students spend their time in school. The study points to several educational advantages for white students and those students without special needs.

For the second year in a row, the TC community gathered together in sadness. Last year, after the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, the community gathered in shock to comfort each other and reflect on what had happened to us as individuals, as a community and as a country. This year, the gathering was a time to mourn those whose lives were lost.

TeachLink, a Jerusalem-based distance learning organization, in partnership with TC Innovations, piloted a program funded by the New York Times Foundation designed to help educators in New York City and Israel to consult with one another and share experiences surrounding recent global events since 9/11. The project involved 15 teachers from PS 20 and JHS 56, two schools in the line of site at "Ground Zero."

Moody's Investors Service has upgraded Teachers College's credit rating to A1 from A3 and has applied the rating to the College's $40 million Series 2002 Revenue Bonds currently being issued through the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York.

The Institute for Urban and Minority Education at Teachers College, Columbia University has received $300,000 from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to bring several visiting minority scholars to campus each year over the next three years beginning in the fall of 2002.

In February of 2001, Inside TC reported on the successful lawsuit brought by the Campaign for Fiscal Equity (CFE)-a coalition of advocacy groups representing school children-against New York State for inadequate method of financing public schools that deprived New York City students of a "sound, basic education" guaranteed by the State Constitution. That decision was reversed recently in an intermediate appeals court.

Each year, the Committee for Community and Diversity (CCD) awards two students a $3000 grant for research that enhances and expands our understanding of diversity. This year's recipients are Leanne M. Stahnke, doctoral candidate in the Curriculum and Teaching Department with faculty sponsor Nancy Lesko, Associate Professor of Education, and Kenneth A. Kozol, Ed.M. candidate in the Arts and Humanities Department with faculty sponsor Bert Konowitz, Adjunct Professor of Music education and director of Spirit Improvision Group.

Albert Ellis, who celebrated his 89th birthday at TC on September 26th, is the founder of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, the "grandfather" of Cognitive Behavior Therapy, a pioneering sexologist and sex therapist, and an eminent marriage and family therapist.

Wilder (pictured), who received her M.A. in 1992 in Educational Psychology and her Ed.D. in 1998 in Educational Psychology, gave advice to incoming students on how to navigate through their studies and the importance of making contacts in the education field.
