Internet Workshops
All Internet workshops meet in a computer lab and use either Macintosh or Windows environments. Each is offered for 1 graduate credit or for non-credit. Registration for each is limited.

Note: Participation for credit requires attendance until 4:45 on each workshop day, and the completion of a one-credit assignment.

Designing Educational Activities using the Internet

MSTU 4831 introduces classroom teachers and instructional designers to a systems approach for designing Internet-specific educational activities. Participants consider issues the Internet brings into educational environments and possible ways to deal with those issues. The class is primarily hands-on with the students working in groups to design and teach activities using the Internet services as well as making presentations.

Publishing on the Web as an Educational Activity

Prerequisite: experience with using web browsers. No prior knowledge about web publishing is needed, though this class builds on concepts covered in MSTU 4831.

This inspiring workshop is for educators, administrators and faculty, who wish to design their own interactive web site using Dreamweaver for their personal or professional enrichment. Learn how to integrate graphics and photos to high quality World Wide Web pages that incorporate tables, stylesheets, Java scripts, web forms and surveys. Participants will also begin to consider various issues that arise when using the web, such as how to make WWW sites accessible, and how to address security, privacy and copyright considerations.

MSTU 4833 introduces students to the various perspectives from which web sites must be viewed, how these perspectives influence web site design and uses for web sites in educational settings. Web sites in educational settings can be used for instructional administration such as providing course calendars, as instructional technologies such as providing simulations or as means for students to produce products. Students are introduced to issues associated with integrating web publishing into educational environments ranging from technical, legal, policy-related and educational. During the class, students will practice developing web sites and implementing solutions to the various issues identified.

Integrating Technology into Curriculum by Creating Web Quests

The Web Quest is a method for teachers to plan and develop student projects that use the World Wide Web. It has been gaining in popularity as teachers see the need for structuring their students' use of the Web. This workshop covers the elements of creating a Web Quest and using it in school curriculum. It begins with an examination of how teachers focus on essential questions for learning and how the Web can be used for problem solving. Then it gives participants the opportunity to evaluate existing Web Quests and to go through all the steps involved in creating their own.

This workshop introduces participants to the creative and practical applications of podcasting in education. Students will learn to record and produce their own 1-minute audio and video podcasts. In addition, students will post their final projects to the Internet and download them onto portable media players.

Instructor: Alyson Vogel and Joshua Simons

Desktop publishing tools are now essential to the classroom and office, and they are used to produce and publish a wide variety of media, educational, advertising and promotional materials. In this workshop, curriculum writers, teachers, school administrators, and leaders in the public and private sector will explore the elements of effective design to create visually stimulating educational content. Using Adobe InDesign - a premier layout and design program within the field of professional desktop publishing - participants will be able to recognize and create engaging educational interfaces for print and the web. The course focuses on developing the concepts, skills and aesthetic design principles to compose flyers, handouts, posters, and brochures for inclusion in advertising layouts, lesson plans and curriculum materials. Final projects include the design of a template which can be used towards the creation of major publications such as corporate newsletters, student newspapers and class newsletters.

Instructor: Shawna BuShell

This workshop introduces participants to the creative methods for the integration of digital video in education. Students will digitize pre-recorded videos and edit them using Apple's iMovie. We will look at the surrounding community as a resource. Students will research a local historical site and produce a one-minute video that will be exported to QuickTime and burned to a DVD.

Prerequisites: No HTML coding or programming experience needed, though experience with MSTU 4832, Dreamweaver, or other graphic Web publishing software is strongly recommended.

Imagine creating a web site that responds to your users, is easy to update and does not consist of thousands of HTML pages to maintain. In this hands on workshop, learn how to create forms, web pages and a database that will work together to give your web site powerful dynamic features. You'll be able to collect information from your users to create surveys, have people register on your web site, password protect your site, and display and sort information so that one web page can replace thousands!

Work Conference: Podcasting in Education

This is an online workshop. Participants log into the workshop site and participate in discussions and other activities when they can.

Instructor: Tom Chandler

This workshop provides an introduction to using Google Earth for the teaching of geography and social studies oriented topics. Participants will learn how to create and edit their own interactive digital maps, and then integrate and evaluate the data found on these maps. Lesson plans and open source resources will be provided. Software: Google Earth, a free software program that brings the world to your classroom. Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites, but some familiarity with using a computer and the Internet is essential.
